Crisis Management & Branding How to Market Your PR Skills in Volatile Economy

Some of us saw the economy crash coming.  Others hoped we could avoid it.  Now that it’s here, we need to be as proactive as we can, not only for our clients, but for our PR careers.

Visiting PRCrossing.com, the top job board for Public Relations jobs, there were over 3,300 pr jobs posted on their site the day this post was written.  While many corporations and small businesses will be tightening their financial belts, there are two areas in the public relations field that I predict will grow out of this economy:  crisis management and Branding PR.

As just about every industry is in some sort of crisis — real or perceived — looking at the best strategies for your clients will benefit them now and in the long-term.  All clients should have an understanding of the potential crises their industry may face and to have a plan of action should that occur.

Crisis Management is likely to move to a more pro-active strategy to allay concerns of the public, consumers or clients — depending on the field or industry your client serves.  Rather than waiting until the catastrophe occurs, PR professionals can consult with their clients now on the best way to strengthen or maintain their reputations and public images.  This isn’t necessarily the traditional way to look at Crisis Management PR, however, as PR professionals, we understand the importance of being a step, or several, ahead of the situation, whether that situation is positive or negative.

Branding is another key area for PR professionals to focus on with their clients.  branding is something that lives in the gray area between Marketing and Public Relations. It has been my experience that a strong PR professional can propel a client’s brand and solidify whatever marketing strategy may be in place for them.  When clients see your expertise in this area, they may decide that a strong PR professional is the right person for the job of taking their brand to the next level as well as enhancing their public image.

By reassessing your public relations skills and marketing them in a new way, you can be sure to find more great  PR jobs , even in this volatile economy, and further enhance your public relations career.
